No Taurine in Japanese Red Bull

There was a recent headline, “Taurine may extend life and health,” that gave me the excuse I needed to stock up on Sugar Free Red Bull. While at MEGA Don Quijote, I was looking for taurine (タウリン) in the ingredient list on the Japanese version of Red Bull and was puzzled when I couldn’t find it.

It turns out that for Red Bull to be classified as a soft drink and not a quasi-drug in Japan, it can’t contain taurine, so they replaced it with arginine, another amino acid. Looks like I’ll be looking at Lipovitan for my “elixir of life.”
